The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Robert A. Miller, Jr. (ASN: 0-5435007), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 13 December 1969 while serving as a forward observer with the forward element of Company C, 2d Battalion, 47th Infantry Regiment (Mechanized), 3d Brigade, 9th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date while moving through dense nipa palm on a sweep operation, the point element came under intense automatic small arms fire from a well-entrenched enemy force in the woodline. A man was wounded in the initial contact and Lieutenant Miller immediately placed intense fire while maneuvering in the heavily booby trapped area until he reached the wounded soldier. After administering first aid to him, Lieutenant Miller carried the soldier back to the friendly element. On the way he saw several enemy soldiers in a nearby fortification and began hurling fragmentation grenades into the enemy position. He then assaulted the position and killed two enemy soldiers. During the assault Lieutenant Miller and three of his comrades were wounded by a claymore mine and were later evacuated to a hospital. First Lieutenant Miller’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
