The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain James E. Mitschke, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with Battery C, 4th Battalion (Aerial Artillery), 77th Artillery Regiment, 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile), in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Mitschke distinguished himself on 23 July 1970 while serving as Aircraft Commander of an AH-1G helicopter on a combat operation deep in enemy held territory. After neutralizing hostile forces who were threatening a friendly reconnaissance team, Captain Mitschke’s section was on a long flight back to their base. Without warning, a barrage of intense anti-aircraft fire engulfed the section and damaged the lead helicopter, forcing it to land amidst the enemy positions. Captain Mitschke, realizing that he had insufficient fuel and ammunition to provide adequate supporting cover, elected to attempt the rescue. Due to the extremely rugged terrain and prevailing winds, he was forced to land on top of a small knoll and hover backwards down the slope to his comrades. Disregarding his own safety, Captain Mitschke continued his slow hovering process despite the intense hostile fire. Arriving over the downed aviators, he lowered the ammunition bay doors and after the men had secured themselves, maneuvered the now unwieldy and bullet-damaged aircraft out of danger. Captain Mitschke’s gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
