The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Specialist Fourth Class Paul A. Paramatto (ASN: US-52751720), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Paramatto distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 20 May 1968 while serving as a grenadier with Troop D, 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Division, during a combat mission near Camp Evans, Republic of Vietnam. While being air assaulted into enemy controlled terrain, an aircraft came under heavy enemy fire and was downed. Disregarding his own safety, Specialist Fourth Class Paramatto exposed himself to the hostile fire as he crossed an open area to free the pilot. He again exposed himself directly while freeing the co-pilot, sustaining wounds during the rescue of the second pilot. His gallant action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
