The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Sergeant Brian Clark, United States Army, for heroism while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Clark distinguished himself by valorous actions on 5 July 1969. On this day, at approximately 0400 hours, Sergeant Clark was leading a seven man patrol to a proposed ambush site. About 0515 hours, Sergeant Clark decided to investigate and left four men to cover himself and two other men while they crossed 250 meters of open terrain to investigate the activity. Sergeant Clark instructed the two men to spread out, crawl within 10 meters, and throw their grenades at his command. Sergeant Clark crawled within 5 meters of the door and gave the signal while initiating contact himself with a grenade. Immediately after the explosion one enemy soldier came running out of the door firing his AK-47 directly at Sergeant Clark. Sergeant Clark quickly eliminated the NVA soldier. Another enemy soldier came running out of the building also firing his automatic weapon, but Sergeant Clark managed to mortally wound the man before his magazine was expended. As a result of Sergeant Clark’s heroic actions and outstanding leadership, the total result of his patrol revealed 5 NVA soldiers killed, and the capture of 3 AK-47’s, 1 SKS, 1 Chi Com grenade, 1 claymore mine, and ammunition. Sergeant Clark’s bravery, leadership and heroism were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
