Headquarters, Americal Division, General Orders No. 2022 (April 17, 1986)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pride in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” (Posthumously) to Specialist Fourth Class Brian Francis Durr (ASN: US-51573116), United States Army, for heroism while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force. Specialist Fourth Class Durr distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 8 February 1968 in the Republic of Vietnam while serving as an automatic rifleman with Company A, 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 198th Infantry Brigade. On that date, his unit was going to the aid of a Marine unit south of Da Nang when they came under extremely heavy automatic weapons, mortar, rocket and small arms fire from a North Vietnamese force estimated at battalion size. Specialist Durr was wounded during the initial action and was sent to the rear along with several other wounded personnel. After moving approximately 100 meters, he noticed five enemy soldiers crawling up on them from the rear. Specialist Durr, electing to remain in place and cover his comrades’ withdrawal, fearlessly moved from his covered position and took the insurgents under fire. With complete disregard for his own safety, he continually exposed himself to effectively engage the enemy. After seeing that his comrades had reached the safety of the weapons platoon’s position, Specialist Durr began his own withdrawal and was mortally wounded by enemy fire. through his courageous actions he saved the lives of several of the other wounded men by providing cover fire for their withdrawal. Specialist Fourth Class Durr’s personal bravery, concern for the lives of his fellow soldiers, and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the Americal Division, and the United States Army.
