The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Captain [then Sergeant] Richard H. Chamberlin, United States Army, for heroism in connection with ground operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Chamberlin distinguished himself by heroism on 3 May 1968 while serving as a platoon leader and medic with the 7th Mobile Strike Force Company, conducting a reconnaissance-in-force mission to locate elements of a North Vietnamese Army regiment. When the company made contact with what was initially thought to be an inferior size enemy unit, Sergeant Chamberlin led his platoon in a flanking maneuver. The enemy, subsequently found to be a battalion, cut Sergeant Chamberlin’s platoon off from the remainder of the company. Sergeant Chamberlin continuously exposed himself to deadly fire from three sides in order to bring fire on the enemy, to direct his troops’ actions, and to retrieve wounded soldiers. For nine hours, Sergeant Chamberlin’s platoon was separated from the remainder of the company, during which time Sergeant Chamberlin continued his heroic actions, directing air support, retrieving, treating, and evacuating the wounded, and at last leading his troops out of the regimental base area to link up with the remainder of the company. Sergeant Chamberlin’s intrepidity, courage, and heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, Special Forces, and the United States Army.
