The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class Henry C. Hubbard, Jr., United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with the 85th Ordnance Detachment in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Hubbard distinguished himself while commanding a squad of Vietnamese soldiers during an assault of a strategic hill at Camp Dak Pek. On 14 April 1970, Specialist Hubbard led his men through a hail of enemy fire as they maneuvered toward the enemy positions atop the hill. Their advance was hampered by narrow approaches to the enemy’s location and heavy entanglements of barbed wire. Nevertheless, the specialist led his men inside the enemy’s defensive perimeter and engaged the hostile force in close range fighting. Pressing the attack, Specialist Hubbard moved ahead of his men and destroyed several enemy bunkers by throwing hand grenades through their entrances and firing ports. His determined actions were instrumental in driving the enemy from their positions and enabling the allied forces to secure the hill. Specialist Fourth Class Hubbard’s gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
