The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class Terry W. Nichols, United States Army, for gallantry in action. Specialist Fourth Class Nichols distinguished himself by heroic actions on 9 July 1970, while serving as a Medical Aidman with Company C, 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. On the date cited above, Company C was inserted into an area of suspected enemy activity. Immediately upon arrival in the area, the unit came under intense hostile fire from a large enemy force, which resulted in several casualties. With the entire element pinned down, Specialist Nichols exposed himself to the barrage of enemy fire as he aided the wounded personnel. With complete disregard for his own safety, Specialist Nichols responded to numerous calls for help as he moved from man to man administering life saving first aid. Further exposing himself to extreme danger, Specialist Nichols coordinated the movement of the casualties to areas where they could be evacuated. Having accomplished this, Specialist Nichols returned to the forward area and personally evacuated two other wounded Soldiers to safety. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to saving the lives of many fellow Soldiers. The bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty exhibited by Specialist Nichols are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
