The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Specialist Fifth Class Richard E. Swofford, Jr. (ASN: 260789304), United States Army, for heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Viet Nam while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Engineer Battalion, from 5 to 6 February 1970. On these dates Specialist Swofford was serving as a member of a tunnel exploration team which was searching a critical tunnel complex. Although two comrades had been wounded the previous day. Specialist Swofford disregarded his personal safety to maneuver through the enemy encampment. There was a heavy concentration of CS gas combined with a low level of oxygen which made working very difficult yet Specialist Swofford continued with his duties until the tunnel was cleared and demolitions were set in the complex. His courageous initiative and exemplary professionalism significantly contributed to the success of his unit’s mission. Specialist five Swofford’s actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself , the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
