(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Lieutenant Colonel Norman Richard Smedes, United States Air Force, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving as Commanding Officer of the 555th Tactical Fighter Squadron and with Headquarters, 432d Tactical Reconnaissance Wing, in action over Southeast Asia from 1969 to 1970. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Colonel Smedes reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
