    March 27, 1968

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Warrant Officer George K. Philips (ASN: W-3158623), United States Army, for gallantry in action in the Republic of Vietnam on 27 March 1968, while serving as Pilot of a UH-1E Helicopter. Warrant Officer Philips received word that a Special Forces Reconnaissance Team, which he had airlifted into a denied area, had been surrounded by a large enemy force and had to be emergency extracted by hoist. Warrant Officer Philips immediately lifted off and, under IFR conditions, flew to the Team’s location by using his FM homer. Because of a critical fuel shortage, caused by the length of time required to pinpoint the team, Warrant Officer Philips elected to land at an enemy-held airstrip so that the Team could be taken aboard. Warrant Officer Philips’ extraordinary heroism in close combat against a numerically superior North Vietnamese force, superb display of courage, devotion to duty, professional skill and unselfish concern for the Team is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
