The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pride in presenting the Soldier’s Medal (Posthumously) to Corporal Robert A. Hefley (ASN: 19079937), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States in 1942. Corporal Hefley was attempting to drive a truck from Wharton, Texas, to Camp Hulen during a hurricane, to evacuate personnel of his unit left at camp. In performing his duty, for which head had volunteered, with utter disregard for his own personal safety, he drowned.
