(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) David Merritt Peters, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commanding Officer of the 3d Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam from 1965 to 1967. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

United States Military Academy Register of GraduatesThe President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) David Merritt Peters, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Lieutenant Colonel Peters distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Commanding Officer of the 3d Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 9 March 1967. On that date, Lieutenant Colonel Peters led a force to find and reinforce a platoon that had been overrun by 150 Viet Cong soldiers. Upon reaching the scene of the platoon’s struggle, he led a small force in a night assault on an enemy-occupied hill on the cite. By his conspicuous gallantry and personal leadership under fire, Lieutenant colonel Peters prevented the loss of additional lives among members of the vastly outnumbered platoon, and the enemy was removed from strategic ground atop the bitterly contested hill. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Peters, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
