Headquarters, Northwest African Air Forces, General Orders No. 128 (June 30, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant (Air Corps) Hollis W. Roofner (ASN: 0-659488), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight in the North African Theater of Operations as Pilot of a P-38 type aircraft. On 21 February 1943, Lieutenant Roofner’s squadron escorted six B-25’s against an enemy convoy in the Sicilian Straits. Enemy fighters persistently attacked his formation. Lieutenant Roofner shot down one JU-88 and aided in the destruction of six other fighters. The protection thus afforded enabled the bombers to make a successful bomb run, which left three of the enemy ships sinking or in flames. Lieutenant Roofner has consistently displayed the highest qualities of leadership, courage and flying ability, which have reflected great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
