The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant (Air Corps) Charles R. Langdon (ASN: 0-495370), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight in the North African Theater of Operations as pilot of a P-38 type aircraft. On 21 February 1943, Lieutenant Langdon’s squadron escorted six B -25’s in an assault on an enemy convoy in the Sicilian Straits. Enemy fighters made repeated attacks on the formation. In the face of intense anti-aircraft fire from the enemy ships, Lieutenant Langdon shot down one enemy aircraft and aided in the destruction of six others, thereby effectively protecting the bombers. Three ships of the convoy were left sinking or in flames. The skill and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Langdon in many combat mission reflected great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
