The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Frank O’Lear, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant O’Lear distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 27 April 1969, while serving as a forward observer with Company A, 2d Battalion (Airmobile), 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), during a reconnaissance in force mission in Tay Ninh Province, Republic of Vietnam. While moving into an enemy bunker complex, Company A was engaged and pinned down by a large enemy force. First Lieutenant O’Lear moved forward from his secure position to aid the third platoon. Upon reaching the forward elements he marked friendly positions with smoke grenades, and directed supporting aircraft to their targets. As the third platoon withdrew, First Lieutenant O’Lear continued to mark their positions with smoke grenades and directed their airstrikes to cover the movement of the friendly troops. His gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
