The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Daniel W. Settle (ASN: 0-5418915), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with Battery C, 8th Battalion, 6th Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 1 November 1968 in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, Captain Settle was serving as battery commander at Fire Support Base RITA near Tong Le Chon. At approximately 0330 hours, the friendly position was subjected to intense hostile rocket and mortar fire, as well as a fierce ground assault which resulted in the penetration of the northwest side of the perimeter. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Captain Settle immediately ran to the battery’s gun emplacements to direct his men personally. As incoming rounds impacted all around, he moved from one position to another, supervising his men’s counterfires and giving encouragement. When three of the howitzer sections were rendered inoperative due to the heavy casualties inflicted by the relentless hostile fire, Captain Settle quickly procured replacements so that continuous fire was placed on the assailants. He dauntlessly exposed himself to the hail of enemy rounds while leading the evacuation of the wounded from the open to a medical aid station. The extraordinary courage and professional demeanor of Captain Settle throughout the extremely hazardous situation were major factors in repelling the massive Viet Cong onslaught, and significantly contributed to the successful defense of the American position. Captain Settle’s unquestionable valor in close combat against numerically superior hostile forces is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
