The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fourth Class Samuel S. Kravchak (ASN: US-51601022), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Kravchak distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 30 August 1967. During an aircraft refueling operation, a high pressure fuel hose burst and began spraying a large stream of fuel on the operating aircraft. With disregard for his own personal safety, Specialist Kravchak jumped from the aircraft and blocked the escaping fuel with his body. He waved the operating aircraft away and continued blocking the fuel until the ship was out of danger. Through his personal courage, he possibly saved the lives of the five occupants of the aircraft and the aircraft itself. His actions are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
