The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain (Infantry) Ernest R. Bowling (ASN: 0-92345), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty while serving with the 189th Assault Helicopter Company, 1st Aviation Brigade, on 26 September 1967 in the Republic of Vietnam. Warrant Officer Bowling distinguished himself while serving as Aircraft Commander of the command and control helicopter during the extraction of a four man indigenous road runner team. Disregarding the extremely heavy enemy weapons fire in the area, he maneuvered his helicopter down a small opening in the 180 foot tall jungles and hovered close to the ground over an extremely small landing zone. He remained in this dangerous position until a wounded team member, along with the rest of the team was aboard the aircraft. Realizing the immediate need for medical treatment for the seriously wounded man, he flew at tree top level at maximum speed over enemy territory all the way from the pick up site to the nearest medical facility. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
