The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major (Transportation Corps) Richard D. Caldwell (ASN: 0-89429), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty while serving with the 189th Assault Helicopter Company, 1st Aviation Brigade, on 29 October 1967 in the Republic of Vietnam. Major Caldwell distinguished himself while serving as Aircraft Commander of a rigging team on a mission to recover an Air Force helicopter forced down in enemy-held territory. He skillfully landed his aircraft in an extremely small area near the downed ship, ignoring small arms fire. He assured the recovery of the aircraft and directed the rigging team. His first recovery attempt failed due to the terrain but, his second effort proved successful. His determination enabled him to complete a successful recovery. Major Caldwell’s skillful flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
