The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer (W-1) Robert W. McConchie (ASN: W-3155952), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty while serving with the 189th Assault Helicopter Company, 1st Aviation Brigade, on 8 November 1967 in the Republic of Vietnam. Warrant Officer McConchie distinguished himself while serving as Aircraft Commander of a UH-1H helicopter on a combat operation. During the operation an armed UH-1C helicopter was shot down by enemy ground fire and crashed in dense jungle. The three injured survivors were subjected to enemy fire from an adjacent ridgeline. Knowing that his helicopter would become the target for all enemy weapons, Warrant Officer McConchie unhesitatingly positioned his helicopter over the survivors. He hovered his aircraft over the area and dropped rigs for the survivors to climb. Throughout the ordeal, his ship was constantly subjected by the intense enemy fire. Warrant Officer McConchie’s courage and determination contributed immeasurably to the successful rescue of the survivors. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
