The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer (W-1) Nolan J. Scott (ASN: W-3154290), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty while serving with the 189th Assault Helicopter Company, 1st Aviation Brigade, on 8 November 1967 in the Republic of Vietnam. Warrant Officer Scott distinguished himself while performing the duty of Aircraft Commander of a utility helicopter in support of Special Forces west of Dak To, Republic of Vietnam. Upon hearing that a gunship had been shot down in the jungles, Warrant Officer Scott immediately flew to the site. En route he learned that the aircraft had been shot down by intensive small arms and automatic weapons fire and that the enemy controlled a ridge overlooking the site. The aircraft commander of the downed gunship advised him that the crash site was receiving intense fire. Completely disregarding the danger from the fire of the enemy, he orbited the area waiting for the first rescue helicopter to complete his pickup. The hostile fire in the crash site increased. Warrant Officer Scott virtually ignored the danger and moved his helicopter to a one hundred foot hover over the crash site while the remainder of the crew searched for survivors. Running dangerously low on fuel, he departed to a fueling site, refueled and again returned to the crash site. Against while at a hover, his aircraft was subjected to hostile fire. He remained over the site until his aircraft received a hit through the cockpit, barely missing him and the pilot. At that time he was required to depart the area in order to save his own aircraft and crew. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
