The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Alan R. Terrell (ASN: 0-5336709), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Second Lieutenant Terrell distinguished himself by heroic actions on 27 August 1967, while serving as a platoon leader with Company B, 2d Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, on a search and destroy operation in the Republic of Vietnam. A Viet Cong force sprung an ambush by detonating a claymore mine and simultaneously opened fire with automatic weapons and rifle grenades. During the initial burst of enemy fire three men were killed and four more men were wounded. With complete disregard for his own safety, Lieutenant Terrell moved out into the line of fire to the area of the second platoon’s dead and wounded personnel. Under intense hostile fire he moved to the bodies and determined they were dead. He then returned to where the wounded men were being evacuated and after these personnel had been moved to safety again subjected himself to heavy enemy fire by returning to the bodies of his comrades. Lieutenant Terrell began dragging the bodies to safety, preventing their capture and possible mutilation by the enemy. He then took command of the second platoon and moved them to cover where they joined up with the remainder of the company. Due to Lieutenant Terrell’s selfless actions the mission was brought to a successful conclusion and the enemy force defeated. Lieutenant Terrell’s personal bravery and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
