The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Specialist Fourth Class Roddie Lee Perry (ASN: 54444434), United States Army, for gallantry in action against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Perry distinguished himself by intrepid actions on 23 February 1969 while serving as a rifleman with Company D, 4th Battalion, 3d Infantry Regiment, 11th Infantry Brigade, Americal Division. On that date, the company was providing security for Landing Zone Duff when they came under intense enemy mortar and rocket fire, and a ground assault on two perimeter bunkers. During the initial attack, Specialist Perry moved across 200 meters of open terrain until he reached one of the bunkers. He called for reinforcements and began to evacuate his wounded comrades. Returning to the bunker, Specialist Perry spotted a wounded fellow soldier tangled in the wire directly in front of the emplacement. Despite enemy fire impacting all around him, Specialist Fourth Class Perry moved forward and carried his comrade to safety. As support troops arrived, Specialist Fourth Class Perry joined in a successful counterattack. Specialist Fourth Class Perry’s courageous actions were directly responsible for saving the lives of his fellow soldiers and were instrumental in the successful defense of the landing zone. Specialist Fourth Class Perry’s personal heroism, professional competence, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the Americal Division, and the United States Army.
