Headquarters, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), General Orders No. 9269 (July 30, 1969)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class Frederick Francis Sona, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Sona distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 12 May 1969, while serving as a radio telephone operator with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion (Airmobile), 9th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), during an enemy attack on Landing Zone Jamie, Republic of Vietnam. When numerous enemy soldiers breached the protective wire and seized two bunkers, Specialist Fourth Class Sona volunteered to join a five man counterattack team to retake the bunkers. At great personal risk, he assaulted the positions, firing his weapon as he advanced. After forcing the enemy to abandon one bunker Specialist Fourth Class Sona seized it and continued to assault the remaining enemy held bunker. Unrelenting, Specialist Fourth Class Sona, with his comrades, was able to force the enemy from the bunker with heavy casualties. His gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
