On that date the UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter he was piloting came under enemy fire. Chief Warrant Officer Hammon was able to pilot the damaged aircraft three-quarters of a mile to a safer area to land. .As his flight of two helicopters crossed the trees, Chief Warrant Officer Hammon took heavy rifle and machine fire from three directions. His helicopter was severely damaged, with extensive damage to the tail rotor. He wrestled the crippled helicopter away from the ambush site and crossed a major waterway and set it down on the ground without injuring any of the 10 crew and passengers. The crew set up a perimeter and ensured the safety of the passengers until they were subsequently extracted.
