The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Robert Bruce Maddox (ASN: 0-5433776), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving as a Forward Observer with Company C, 2d Battalion (Airmobile), 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), in action on 11 February 1969 during a reconnaissance-in-force mission near Bien Hoa. When his unit became heavily engaged with a large enemy force, Lieutenant Maddox exposed himself to the intense hostile fire as he moved forward to call in and adjust artillery and aerial rocket artillery upon the insurgents’ positions. When a soldier was wounded nearby, Lieutenant Maddox administered first aid to the casualty and moved him to safety. With complete disregard for his own safety, he returned to his exposed position in order to continue his vital mission. At this time, Lieutenant Maddox was mortally wounded. His gallant action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
