The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Uwe Lindner (ASN: 0-5238542), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty while serving with the 189th Aviation Company (Assault Helicopter), 1st Aviation Brigade, in the Republic of Vietnam on 13 June 1968. First Lieutenant Lindner distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Aircraft Commander on a troop carrying helicopter that was summoned to a rescue friendly ground unit west of Dak To. Lieutenant Lindner approached the first landing zone under heavy fire and vainly attempted to descend into it. Air strikes by Air Force “Skyraiders” failed to decrease the concentrated fire. Supporting helicopter gunships made unsuccessful firing passes which failed to suppress enemy fire or to cover his approach. Under heavy fire, Lieutenant Lindner maneuvered his aircraft into the landing zone, but due to the denseness of the foreboding jungle he was unable to land. Under this abominable conditions, he guided his ship out of the landing zone and continued to direct the rescue operation. Also, his aircraft had suffered severe damage in his valiant attempt to land. Lieutenant Lindner’s fierce determination and inimitable aviation aptitude contributed to saving a friendly unit from annihilation. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
