The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Captain (Field Artillery), [then First Lieutenant] Edgar J. Ross (ASN: 0-1108975), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with Battery D, 3d Antiaircraft Artillery (Automatic Weapons) Battalion (Self Propelled), 3d Infantry Division, in action in Korea. On 22 December 1950, near Hungnam, Korea, an American soldier wandered into a minefield and detonated an anti-personnel mine. The extent of the soldier’s injuries could not be ascertained as he was still lying out in the minefield. Captain Ross and another officer, knowing the danger of entering an unfamiliar minefield, unhesitatingly probed their way approximately forty yards through the mined area to the injured man. Finding that the man was dead Captain Ross helped remove his body from the minefield. The exemplary courage displayed by Captain Ross reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
