The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Bruce D. Cochran, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam while serving with the 189th Aviation Company (Assault Helicopter), 1st Aviation Brigade, on 7 May 1969 in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Cochran distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Aircraft Commander of a UH-1H helicopter in support of allied units near Ben Het. Despite intense enemy ground fire and several hits on his aircraft, he led the flight of three ships into the landing zone. As the operation progressed and enemy resistance increased, Lieutenant Cochran fearlessly led a second sortie. He continued to direct the entire operation including the fire support of the orbiting gunships, and was responsible for the entire operation being completed without a single loss of life. His devotion to duty was a major factor in the success of the mission and served as an inspiration to all who participated. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
