Headquarters, 1st Aviation Brigade, General Orders No. 4167 (August 23, 1969)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Morey L. Jeffery, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam while serving with the 189th Aviation Company (Assault Helicopter), 1st Aviation Brigade, on 9 May 1969 in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Jeffery distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Pilot aboard the lead UH-1H helicopter on a mission to extract wounded soldiers from an area near Ben Het. As his aircraft reached the landing zone, it received heavy automatic weapons fire, and he directed the fire of the crewmen on enemy positions as the aircraft commander quickly departed the area. When no signs of damage were evident, another approach was quickly begun. A safe entry was made despite the persistent enemy fire, and the casualties were loaded aboard. By now, mortars were impacting close enough to the ship that both chin bubbles were blown out, and another round riddled the side of the aircraft with numerous shrapnel holes. Large holes were also torn in the fuel cells. Lieutenant Jeffery kept a close watch on all instruments as they quickly departed the landing zone for Ben Het, where medical aid was given the wounded men upon touchdown. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
