The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain (Infantry) James W. Manifold, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam while serving with the 189th Aviation Company (Assault Helicopter), 1st Aviation Brigade, on 28 May 1969 in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Manifold distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Aircraft Commander of a UH-1H helicopter. He volunteered to fly flight lead for a MEDEVAC and supply mission to an allied force in the vicinity of Dak To. Captain Manifold initiated a low angle, high speed approach to the area directly over hostile concentrations of enemy fire in order to avoid giving his destination away. His aircraft began to receive heavy fire from several locations, but the approach was upheld. Upon getting down, automatic weapons fire erupted from the treeline. Captain Manifold calmly brought the ship to a hover as soon as all critical injuries were safely aboard. At that time, mortar rounds began impacting the landing zone. Captain Manifold deftly brought his aircraft around at treetop level and lifted out of the area. By his outstanding judgment and flying ability, many allied lives were saved. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
