The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class [then Private] Ronald Edward Campbell, United States Army, for gallantry in action. Private First Class Campbell distinguished himself by heroic actions on 10 May 1970, while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. While on a reconnaissance operation, Company B came under intense attack from a large enemy force. With complete disregard for his own safety, Private Campbell immediately dismounted his vehicle and began placing devastating machine gun fire on the aggressors. When the element leader, whose weapon had malfunctioned, was about to be engaged by two enemy soldiers, Private Campbell exposed himself to a hail of hostile fire as he stepped between his comrade and the insurgents and eliminated them with a burst from his weapon. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to saving the life of a fellow Soldier. The bravery and devotion to duty exhibited by Private Campbell are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
