The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer (W-1) Walker T. Williams, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty while serving with the 189th Aviation Company (Assault Helicopter), 1st Aviation Brigade, in the Republic of Vietnam on 22 May 1969. Warrant Officer Williams distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Pilot aboard a UH-1H helicopter, participating in a combat assault southwest of Dak To. The lead ship approached and deposited its troops, but on departure was subjected to intense enemy automatic and mortar fire, resulting in the fatal wounding of the pilot. The lift was temporarily discontinued leaving the inserted squad in an extremely perilous condition, until Warrant Officer Williams and his Aircraft Commander immediately volunteered to attempt to reinforce the stranded squad. He directed the helicopter gunship cover while also directing the crew’s suppressive fire. The reinforcements were successfully deposited. Warrant Officer Williams’ quick response to a desperate situation and calm professionalism under fire were an inspiration to the rest of the flight and were the key to the successful completion of the mission. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
