The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Chief Warrant Officer August A. Etteldorf, United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States in the Republic of Vietnam. chief Warrant Officer Etteldorf distinguished himself on 29 October 1970, at Cam Ranh Bay, Republic of Vietnam. On that date, he was awakened by a runner who notified him that a 3/4 ton truck had driven into downed power lines nearby. Rushing through heavy rains, he arrived at the scene of the accident just as the driver of the vehicle managed to jump clear. The downed power lines had become entangled in the undercarriage of the truck and electricity was arcing between metal parts of the truck and the ground. A passenger in the vehicle became very excited and tried to sit up. Warrant Officer Etteldorf immediately instructed the passenger to lie still and not touch any metal part of the truck. He obtained a broom from a nearby building and used it to open the truck door, instructing the passenger to extend one leg from the truck. He then grasped the man by the leg and yanked him clear of the vehicle, thus preventing the man from being seriously insured and possibly killed. Chief Warrant Officer Etteldorf’s heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
