Headquarters, 9th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 4373 (August 30, 1967)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Herbert E. Lind (ASN: 0-5321590), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 4th Battalion, 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, in 19 June 1967, while serving as Company Commander on a search and destroy mission as a part of Operation CONCORDIA near the village of Ap Hac, Vietnam. As the unit moved across an area of open marshland, it suddenly came under an intense volume of automatic and semi-automatic weapons fire from a numerically superior Viet Cong force located in well-entrenched bunkers along a treeline. With his platoon unable to move, Captain Lind immediately began calling for and directing the artillery fire on the enemy position. During the afternoon hours, Captain Lind bravely directed the movement of the Monitor, a boat containing heavy artillery, up a small jungle stream. Although exposed to enemy fire, Captain Lind then returned to his platoon and led his men on an assault upon the insurgents. Captain Lind’s extreme courage and outstanding leadership were an inspiration to all and contributed significantly to the overwhelming defeat of the enemy force. Captain Lind’s extraordinary heroism while engaged in close combat against a numerically superior Viet Cong force is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
