The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Sergeant First Class David Jeffrey Neuzil, United States Army, for exceptionally valorous achievement as a Platoon Sergeant on 12 November 2008 during Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. Sergeant First Class Neuzil and a small dismounted security element were pulling security in the courtyard of the Iraqi Army’s Company Headquarters, When a uniformed Iraqi soldier wearing body armor and carrying an AK-47, walked behind the soldiers and opened fire, instantly causing casualties. Without hesitation or regard for his own safety, Sergeant First Class Neuzil identified the Iraqi soldier as a threat and without taking cover, began engaging the gunman who was less than 12 feet away, hitting the gunman multiple times with his M-4 rifle. After eliminating the threat, Sergeant First Class Neuzil immediately began assessing and treating casualties. His valorous actions reflect great credit upon him, 25th Infantry Division, Multi National Division – North, and the United States Army.
