The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Lieutenant Colonel Dick Merril Crowell (AFSN: AF-7301), United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life at Helmos Mountain near Kalavryta, Greece, from 13 January 1966 to 15 January 1966. On these dates, Colonel Crowell with complete disregard of his own injuries, comfort, and self-preservation continuously assisted, nursed, protected and inspired the survivors of an aircraft crash until rescued. At the risk of his life, he made a perilous ascent to the mountain to assist the rescue helicopter in locating a landing area. By his courageous actions and humanitarian regard for his fellow man, Colonel Crowell has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
