The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class David Charles Schultz (ASN: 54971402), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a rifleman with Company B, 2d Battalion (Airborne), 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Division, in action against the enemy during a search and destroy mission in the A Shau Valley, Republic of Vietnam. When he saw movement in an enemy bunker, Private First Class Schultz exposed himself to the hostile fire as he assaulted the enemy position. He crawled within a few yards of the bunker and tossed a hand grenade into it, killing the enemy soldiers inside. Later in the day Private First Class Schultz was mortally wounded by enemy fire. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
