The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Alexander J. Groesbeck (ASN: 32796341), United States Army, for gallantry in action at ***** Islands on 8 February 1945. Private Groesbeck, while acting as flank security in an advance, was subjected to fire from a concealed enemy machine gun. One of his companions occupying a position 50 yards away was hit and lay in an open area unable to move. Private Groesbeck, unmindful of mortar and machine-gun fire, inched forward unprotected, endeavored to rescue his comrade, and was mortally wounded in his attempt when only five yards from his goal. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
