The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Air Corps) Arland Stanton (ASN: 0-441801), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy Pilot of a P-40 Fighter Airplane of the 7th Fighter Squadron, 49th Fighter Group, FIFTH Air Force, in action against the enemy in aerial combat in the Pacific Theater of Operations, on 12 March 1944. On that date Major Stanton was leader of a P-40 squadron escorting U.S. bombers to the Japanese base at Brandi Plantation, New Guinea. Major Stanton shot down one enemy fighter plane and helped to shoot down two others. The gallantry displayed by him, in totally disregarding his personal safety by pressing continuous attacks on the enemy giving the bombers all possible protection is in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service.
