Headquarters, 9th Air Force, General Orders No. 205 (August 15, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Air Corps) George Winfield Stalnaker (ASN: 0-23784), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Command Pilot of a B-26 Marauder Bomber and Commanding Officer of the 391st Bombardment Squadron, 34th Bombardment Group (Heavy), NINTH Air Force, in aerial operations in the European Theater of Operations, in 1944. During the bomb run, Lieutenant Colonel Stalnaker’s plane was hit by flak which critically damaged the right engine. Although his plane was losing altitude rapidly, Lieutenant Colonel Stalnaker, displaying unusual fortitude and skill, determined to lead his formation over the target. He ignored his personal safety and continued the bombing run. After releasing his bombs on the target, he peeled away from the formation, but remained at the control of his domed aircraft until all his crew had jumped to safety. Only then did Lieutenant Colonel Stalnaker himself abandon his ship which stalled and crashed in flames. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Stalnaker, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
