(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain (Medical Corps) Charles Arthur Stafford (AFSN: 0-22686), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Flight Surgeon with the 9th Bombardment Squadron, 7th Bombardment Group (Heavy), Far East Air Force, in operations at Djokjakarta, Java, in February 1942. When 22 sailors from U.S. Navy cruisers U.S.S. Houston and U.S.S. Marblehead, wounded in the Battle of Makassar Strait arrived, Captain Stafford and local Dutch doctors worked late into the night to treat the sailors, most of whom had suffered severe burns. When the Japanese invaded Java on February 28, 1942, Captain Stafford was instrumental in getting the sailors evacuated on the freighter Abbekerk. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Stafford, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
