The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Harry E. Smith (ASN: 16003275), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, 11th Bombardment Group (Heavy), SEVENTH Air Force, in action during the Japanese aerial attack on Hickam Field, Territory of Hawaii, on 7 December 1941. Private Smith, conspicuous for bravery and courage, assisted in the repair of airplanes during the severe attacks of bombing and strafing centered on the hangers. Private Smith was killed in this attack. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private Smith, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
