The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant John K. Regan (ASN: 31389218), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action while serving as Radio Operator/Gunner of a B-25 Mitchell Bomber of the 428th Bombardment Squadron, 310th Bombardment Group (Medium), TWELFTH Air Force. On 8 February 1945, upon the completion of the bomb run over a railroad bridge at Dogna, Italy, more than ten ME-109’s and FW-190’s attacked Staff Sergeant Regan’s formation and in the ensuing battle enemy fire seriously wounded him about the hand, arm, and leg and heavily damaged his airplane. Although bleeding profusely and suffering intense pain, Staff Sergeant Regan, displaying utmost determination and stamina, courageously remained at his guns and assisted in the destruction of one enemy fighter and in forcing the others to break off combat. Not until his formation had reached friendly territory did Staff Sergeant Regan leave his position and submit to first-aid treatment for his wounds. His gallant devotion to duty and outstanding proficiency in combat reflect highest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
