Headquarters, 8th Air Force, General Orders No. 470 (July 27, 1944)

(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Air Corps) Homer Eugene Raker (ASN: 0-759659), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Co-Pilot of a B-17 Flying Fortress Bomber in the 303d Bombardment Group (Heavy), EIGHTH Air Force, in aerial operations during a bombing Mission over Berlin, Germany, on 29 April 1944. Flak had disabled one engine and mortally wounded Lieutenant Raker. The pilot asked him to adjust the engines, and despite being in great pain, he feathered the engine and adjusted the supercharger, before he slumped forward unconscious, and died. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Second Lieutenant Raker, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
