The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Charles D. Lakeman (ASN: 15088295), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 760th Tank Battalion, in action against the enemy in Italy on 1 October 1944. Sergeant Lakeman ordered his tank forward to effect the escape of the crew of another tank which had been pierced by an enemy rocket projectile and was burning. Under small arms and mortar fire, he dismounted and rendered first aid to a wounded officer who had evacuated the burning tank and was having trouble making his way to the rear. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
