Headquarters, 15th Air Force, General Orders No. 10 (November 21, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Air Corps) Robert Praun (ASN: 0-727769), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a B-26 Marauder Bomber of the 440th Bombardment Squadron, 319th Bombardment Group (Medium), FIFTEENTH Air Force, in aerial operations in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations, on 4 July 1943. Lieutenant Praun was on a mission to bomb Gerbini Stellites four and five, Italy. Intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire damaged the starboard engine, causing a loss of power and forcing this plane to leave the formation. Six MA-202s immediately attacked the straggling bomber and succeeded in setting the right wing on fire. Ordering the crew to bail out, Lieutenant Praun lowered the landing gear, enabling the co-pilot and bombardier to escape through the nose wheel door. Displaying outstanding courage and great professional skill, he kept the plane under control while the waist gunner gave first aid treatment to the wounded turret gunner and helped the latter adjust his parachute before both bailed out. The plane was then seen to dive to earth in flames. First Lieutenant Praun’s unselfish devotion to duty and personal resourcefulness in remaining at his position to insure the safety of his crew has upheld the highest traditions of the Army Air Forces. By his unusual initiative and personal bravery, this officer has reflected great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
