Frederick Olmsted graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado, Class of 1964. During the Vietnam War, he was credited with shooting down two enemy MiG-21 aircraft in two separate aerial combat actions. He resigned in 1972 as a U.S. Air Force Captain.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Captain Frederick Shoyer Olmsted, Jr., United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force as an F-4D Aircraft Commander of the 13th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in action over hostile territory on 16 April 1972. On that date, Captain Olmsted led a flight of four F-4D tactical fighter aircraft providing air defense support for fighter-bombers in the vicinity of Hanoi. When a flight of two hostile aircraft attempted to attack the formation, Captain Olmsted led his element against the hostile formation and shot down the leading aircraft. This courageous and aggressive attack, while faced with the constant threat of surface-to-air missiles, kept the hostile aircraft from attacking friendly aircraft. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Olmsted has reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Frederick Shoyer Olmsted, Jr., United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an F-4D Aircraft Commander of the 13th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in action on 31 January 1972. On that date, Captain Olmstead participated in a flight of sixteen F-4D tactical fighters to provide armed escort for unarmed RF-4C reconnaissance aircraft into a heavily defended area of North Vietnam. When, simultaneously, antiaircraft fire became a threat to the flight and the launch of surface-to-air missiles became imminent, Captain Olmsted boldly attacked and destroyed one surface-to-air missile facility and silenced the antiaircraft fire, allowing the reconnaissance aircraft to accomplish the assigned objective. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Olmsted reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.

On that date, Captain Olmsted led a flight of two F-4D tactical fighter aircraft scrambled from alert status to provide air defense support for United States air operations in Southeast Asia. When Captain Olmsted learned that two hostile aircraft were closing on friendly aircraft, he pursued and shot down the lead aircraft while the second aircraft retreated to safety. This courageous and aggressive attack, while faced with the constant threat of surface-to-air missiles, kept the hostile aircraft from attacking friendly aircraft. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Olmsted has reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
