The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Air Corps) Cassius M. Moter (ASN: 0-824170), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action while serving as a member of the Co-Pilot of a Bomber in the EIGHTH Air Force, on a heavy bombardment mission over Germany, on 29 July 1944. Arriving over the target, intense and accurate ground fire was encountered. Lieutenant Moter’s plane was repeatedly hit by flak, wounding both himself and the pilot. Suffering intense pain and unable to use his left foot, Lieutenant Moter took over the controls, righted the plane, and headed for base. Since a number of controls had been shot away, it was necessary for him to manually fly the aircraft during the entire return trip. The safe return of the aircraft was directly due to the courage and indomitable fighting spirit of Lieutenant Moter, whose actions inspired all flying with him. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Second Lieutenant Moter, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
